How we define the word "strained" in this sentence, "I srtained to look at the clock on the table".

Strain here means to exercise more effort in order to see the clock. The person straining their eyes is probably squinting or not wearing their contacts/glasses.

In this case she forced her eye muscles. She probably squinted.
