what is the meaning of 'he was succeed by his son'?

"He was succeeded by his son" means that the person's son took over the father's position after the father. For example, if the president of a company quits and his son takes over, you could say that the father was succeeded by his son. In this sense, "succeeded' sort of means "followed."
