The answer to your question is the letter "s," which makes the singular "book" into "books." If you add an "s" to both, it's perfect English. I don't read books. I read no books.
To make it singular, "I don't read that book." "I have not read that book."

1. Я (вообще) не читаю книги - "I don't read books", вариант "I read no books" то же самое, но первый более прост на слух, чтоли :)
2. Речь идёт о какой-то определённой нечитанной книге - "I haven't read that book" (Такую книгу я не читал).
