difference between pungent and sharp as in taste or smell .
The air had a sharp sooty smell. ('sharp ' means 'acrid' or pungent?)

'pungent' means a strong and sharp smell. Here are more synonyms: hot, spicy, seasoned, sharp, acid, bitter, stinging, sour, tart, aromatic, tangy, acrid, peppery, piquant.
If you mean that the air was polluted you can that say it smelt acrid or smoky.
