Does 'He took out his notebook and flipped the pages.' mean 1? If not, does it mean 2?
1.He took his notebook from somewhere and flipped the pages.
2.He opened his notebook and flipped the pages.

If "he took out the notebook" it means it was inside something, for example his pocket or his briefcase.
You could say, for example: He took the notebook out of his briefcase.
So sentence 2 is not right.
