Simple Sentences = one subject, one verb, one idea... I had miso for breakfast. Compound Sentences = two simple sentences joined with a conjunction... I woke up late AND had miso for breakfast. Complex Sentences = using subordination, and (some would say) more complex noun/verb phrases... The other day, I woke up (later than I normally do) and had miso for breakfast, which is not my first choice because then I'm hungry again mid-morning.
