The full phrase is 'sanctum sanctorum' - it comes from the Latin, meaning 'holy place'.
It is the most holy place withing a church or temple. More often though, it is used to refer to a place that is very private, in which only selected people can go.
"He considered his room where he wrote as his sanctum sanctorum. He was not to be disturbed while he was working, except for the most important of reasons."
