"Cependant", "néanmoins" and "toutefois" all mean "however".
Example: L'intrigue tient la route, mais il faut toutefois/néanmoins/cependant reconnaître que le scénario laisse par moments à désirer.
In this sentence the verb "reconnaître" can be placed both before and after the adverb.
