What is the difference in usage of the two spellings: "fresh water"/ "freshwater"?

Fresh - water is an adjective and a noun, two separate words. The fresh is referring to the newness and cleanliness of the water.
Freshwater is one word and is referring to the type of water in a body of water like a lake that is practically salt free unlike the water of the ocean.
