Which answer is the better choice and why?

A is correct. It's correct because whole sentence is framed in past tense, as is option A, but option B is in present tense.
If the sentence were written as, "We hope that ______ the game, but the other team is playing very well", then B would be correct. The correct answer depends entirely on the tense.
