In the capital November 22, 1963, was a day out of season, filled with echoes of summer and warnings of fall: a day of musk, tang, sunlight, and sudden chill, for the wind had a slight bite.

The writer has taken a certain amount of poetic license here. Musk means, broadly speaking, an animal scent; tang is a strong flavor.
