okumak is a verb in the infinitive form. It's "to read" in English. it's true that the root of this verb is "oku". all verbs in the full infinitive end in 'mak or 'mek. if you look in a dictionary you will find verbs given in this form. if you remove the k from the end of a full infinitive you get the short infinitive which functions as a noun. the resulting "okuma" is a noun okumayi - this is just the above "okuma" noun being used as the object of a verb. when a verb is the direct object of a verb the suffix -i is added to the noun, as in the case of the above example the noun ends in a vowel, the -y is added as a buffer between the two vowels.
