what does "pet prejudice" mean? little?
A petty functionary at the Library of Congress, clinging to a pet prejudice of librarians, refused to believe a word until it had been confirmed by the New York Times. He tried to call the Times Washington bureau, found he could not get through, and prickled with the sense of alarm which was terrifying telephoners elsewhere.

Librarians at the Library of Congress were prejudiced against news sources other than the New York Times. They found the Times to be the most trustworthy source of information.
