Syllables are like divisions in a spoken word.
Take the word "parable" for instance.
It has three syllables. PAR-A-BLE.
Or the word "dog".
It has one syllable, so it's monosyllabic. DOG.
One more, "elephant".
It also has three syllables. EL-EPH-ANT.
