To be 'street smart' is to be able to take your knowledge or common sense and apply it to be able to survive in the street, or real life. This is contrasted to someone who is 'book smart', who has academic knowledge of a subject, but may not be able to apply it in any setting except a classroom. The street smart label is sometimes applied to people who have no formal education but are very well adapted to get along in life.
