Is this setence natural? Or what would you say? (party, meeting etc.) He didn't show up on the grounds of his illness.

I would say "He didn't show up because he was sick." 'On the grounds of' is too formal.

It sounds a bit stiff because of the 'on the grounds of' . Most people would just say 'because'
