Can you divide 30 ____ 6, please? A. by B. with Note: I agree that A sounds nicer. What does it sound to you when you hear people use B?I guess in this case I should say "how does it sound to you," right?

A. is correct. 30 BY 6 is the common terminology for mathematics. It is not "wrong" to say "with". It's just that nobody in the USA at least, says it.

Thanks xarmanla, it is not correct to say "divide 30 with 6" but it is OK to say "divide 30 apples among 6 people." Here "to divide" means "to distribute."

I have heard young students use the latter but I have always told them it was wrong. The dividend is divided by the divisor to determine the quotient. On the other hand, I could divide thirty apples among six children.
