what does "tight-knit"mean? The couple went to see a two-family house that was home to members of an extended family on Decatur Street in Bed-Stuy. “You could tell it was a tight-knit family because they had only one kitchen,” Mr. Masterson said. “They didn’t even bother using the top kitchen” — empty of appliances — “because they had family meals every night.” the original link of this passage: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/14/realestate/in-clinton-hill-a-high-tolerance-for-hammering.html?ref=thehunt

I am a knitter who often knits fisherman knit sweaters. If I knit loosely, then the sweater will not be able to keep out rain or icy winds. For these sweaters, I keep the yarn taut by maintaining tension. Using an analogy between the close spacing of the stiches in my knitting, the family bonds together both in space and in their relationship to one another.
