in the USA, we refer to the topic of sport as "sports", because it's many kinds of sports. So when we say sports, we think of all kinds of sports: basketball, football, american football, baseball, golf, etc.
"sport" as a generic word means something you do for competition or test of skill.
some people refer to hunting as a "sport", there is an expression "hunting for sport", which means you are hunting but not because you want to eat the animal, but rather, for the challenge.
so, "sport" usually means a certain kind of discipline, basketball, hunting, running, etc.
"sports" typically refers to specific competitive physical activities
let me know if this is unclear or i can explain further
