What are the differences between "Clothes" and "Clothing"?(Plus Apparel.) Hi, friends. This may sound a basic question but I am getting confused with how to say/use "Clothes" , "Clothing" and "Apparel"...I have seen this word ; "Clothing" everywhere but I often use this ;"Clothes".(Examples; I'll change my clothes, I got these summer clothes at discount prices..etc). Maybe, Clothes is a general term for Clothing? Or It is colloquial? I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me..Thanks for reading.

The difference is the degree of formality (or pompousness! ;^) Clothes is what you wear, as you said. Clothing is a little more formal - e.g. What shall we do with the patient's clothing? He works in the clothing industry. Apparel is even more so. It would usually be used to describe a type of shop, or even more commonly - a department within a store. e.g. You won't find that here - try over in women's apparel. -or- The mall has a wide range of womens and mens apparel outlets.
