A GENTE is used when talk in informal situation and used only in Brazil. rules of grammar NÓS is correct.
GENTE without A is people.
A GENTE (or NÓS) foi ao zoológico. (we went to zoo.)
Tem muita GENTE na escola. ( there are many people at school)

Gente=people
A gente=people + I =We
Examples:
Eu e você gostamos de cantar =Nós gostamos de cantar=A gente gosta de cantar
Portugues is a little strange,but "a gente" is not common.Is better e more correct "Nós".
Apologies for my english mistakes.
