Can I use "a lot of" in negative sentences??

Hi Vale - you certainly can. Just remember that it's considered informal (conversational) and it would be better to use 'much' or 'many' if you need something more formal. For example: There aren't a lot of (many) people here; I don't have a lot of (much) free time.

It works fine to say, there are not many.
