What is the difference between trash rubbish and garbage

The Americans say trash and garbage. The British say rubbish.

trash = rubbish = garbage

I lived in Los Angeles where our local government provided this definition:
Garbage decomposes and so it goes into a compost pile
Trash goes to the landfill
Rubbish is a British word for either garbage or trash
