"the previous night" and "last night" Is there any difference between the two phrases?

"Last night" refers to the night before today. "The previous night" can be used in the same way, but is often used when you're referring to the night before some other day in the past. John spent last Thursday at home because the previous night he had eaten bad seafood and got food poisoning.
