"Esperar" in Spanish may mean three different verbs in English.
Wait:
Te espero en la oficina = I wait for you in the office.
Hope:
Esperamos que no sea demasiado tarde = we hope it is not too late.
Expect:
Los expertos esperan una baja en el precio del dólar = the experts expect a devaluation of the Dollar.

Exactly, we use Espero in both meanings, hope and wait.
Yo espero (tengo la esperanza) que sí pase
Yo espero (verbo esperar) el autobús
