does this sentence mean :"serpent only eat once in a whole year?"
The serpent kind eat, I believe, but once in a year; or rather, but only just at one season of the year.

Hm, this sounds a little confusing but based on the first & second part of the sentence, I think that the serpent eats only once a year.
