,I've been translating a Korean comic, and says things like '어떻게 뒨 거지?' or '무슨 일 이 생긴 거지? and '진짜 죽은 건가?
I have tried to find its meaning but I could not find its exact definition, the translator does a good job translating, but I not trust him totally,

거지 is colloquial short form for 것이지
composed of 것이다+지
used for asking about some happening.
건가 is colloquial short form for 것인가
composed of 것이다+ㄴ가
used for asking oneself or assuming about an event.

어떻게 된거지?, 무슨 일이 생긴거지? => What happen?
진짜 죽은건가? => Is he/she really dead?
