Rosario: I you want to translate songs, that is a good way to practice English in my opinion. Also, you can find the lyrics to almost every English song ever published by doing a websearch like: Lyrics + "Song Title" My notebook entries are full of songs that can be used for the study of English. http://www.italki.com/user/1126711#notebook

I don't understand. Translation involves two languages and two cultures. It is so much more difficult than learning a language. Indeed translation is quite rightly treated as a separate subject at university. Would a learner not be better off concentrating on learning English directly rather than via the circuitous route of mastering the art of translation? I think most people would agree that mastery of the art of translation comes AFTER the English language has been mastered.

I agree with Moira, but as a classical singer I would advise you to translate classical songs from the 19th and 20th century. That way you learn lots of new descriptive vocabulary, poetic language and as the vast majority of these songs were first poems by famous poets...the grammar is usually excellent. I've learned so much about European languages and have picked up so much vocabulary relating to nature, love, music etc this way..hope that helps :-)
