"worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum....."
Hi, here are some quotes from song "wear sunscreen". and I have a question about it..
1) "Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum."
((So, does this mean something like.. To chewing bubble gum slows the function of the gastrointestinal tract by intake of an excess air and it usually distracts your mind from your study. then, "worrying" would never bring you any good thing just as an example of bubble gum. so, don't waste your time worrying too much.?
I think I kind of understand above sentences, but I'm not sure about the below..
umm ))
2) "The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday."
I feel so stupid but I would greatly appreciate your help..
-AiEspecially about this part" at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday"...

1) It means that worry doesn't help at all, the same way chewing gum won't help you solve an algebra problem.
2) Real troubles are unexpected; they're not the things you worried about. They can hit at any random time, such as 4pm on a Tuesday.

There is no need to feel stupid. You are exploring subtle expressions in a foreign language. And I enjoy your posts here :-)
