"senior academics" is senior professor.
senior refers to old. Is it right?

Position or intellectual eminence, not age, my dear.
Age is not a qualification in academic circles.
Academia is not.a geriatric ward in a hospital, though some of our friends think so.

In this context it does not necessarily mean age. It can just refer to someone taking a leading role on the staff, or to someone taking a higher position. Sometimes this 'senior' person can be a much older worker, but not in all cases.
