what's the difference between "go back" and "return"?
I'm watching a show on tv and the Indonesian MC said to the guests "you may return to your seat."
was he correct?

They have the same meaning, return is perhaps a little more formal but you can use them interchangeably.

Both have the same meaning and it's correct to use either in this context. again in this context return does sound a bit more formal and quite more polite.
