When I arrived at the cinema the film HAD already started.
You need a past perfect (had started) because the film started before the action in the 'When ..' part of the sentence.

Hey Olga, since the movie started before your arrival you would say:
"When I arrived at the cinema, the film HAD already started"
Cheers :)

It should be "When I arrived at the cinema, the film HAD already started". It makes the timeline more clear.

In American English:
"When I arrived at the cinema, the film HAD already started."
or
"The film was already playing by the time I arrived at the cinema."

When I arrived at the cinema, the film had already started.
Past Simple.
