How to say these...eat up 1. All are correct except "build up" and "burn down." "Build up" isn't used to mean to finish building something. It's used to describe something that increases or accumulates. You can build up a wall, literally or metaphorically. When talking about setting fire to a structure, we nearly always use the phrase "burn the house down". When you burn something up, it's usually something smaller that you're using for fuel. In the passive, you could say that a house burned up, but it's more common to use burned down.
