'Wedding' is a very common everyday word.
'Nuptials' is an extremely rare word. A large proportion of native English speakers probably have no idea what it means, and most of us have never said or even written it in our lives. You might come across it in older texts. Nowadays writers use it sometimes, often for the purpose of comic or dramatic effect.
