When do we use "ко" instead of "к"?

Ко mostly preceeds a word starting with 2 consonants so that it'll be easier to pronounce:
- ко мне, ко дню рождения, ко сну, ко рту
You can compare it with в/во: в понедельник / во вторник
Unfortunately, it's not always as smooth with к/ко. There are sometimes variants, so I'd recommend learning the particular cases by heart.
