Why 두 시 is more correct than 둘시?
I should use pure numbers so why not 둘?

두 is a determiner and 둘 is a numeral
두 is used before a unit name
둘 is used for counting number
likewise, 한 and 하나, 세 and 셋, 네 and 넷 are determiner and numeral pairs.
from five to ten, there are no differences.
I guess it is due to high frequency of use and ease of pronunciation.

I believe it's to do with pronunciation (발음). Originally it may have been 둘시. But because it's easier to say 두시 than 둘시. Overtime, it became more natural to say and use 두 시.
Try it for yourself, does it feel more comfortable to say 두 시 without ㄹ?
