I suspect it's a typo and should be "moping around". Were they unhappy in this scene?

I agree. It'll be a misspelling of 'moping' around. If they are moping around they'll be feeling unhappy, bored, and aimless.

Mopping around- moping around means to walk about aimlessly, dejected, sad or depressed-like. Think: gloomy. Sometimes it is used when kids are claiming to be bored, nothing to do and the just 'mope about'... To which parents may say, " go out and play!"
