Hola Mike! Podría decirse "para tantear el terreno". Example: The trainer went to see the training of the rival to test the waters-> El entrenador decidió ir a ver el entrenamiento del rival para tantear el terreno. I don't know if the sentence in English es correct. But that is the meaning.

La traducción de esta frase podría ser: medir el agua / tantear el agua/probar el agua. Pero sucede que en español esta frase no es tan usada como en el Ingles, y en general se utilizan frases como la que anteriormente te escribieron. -Tantear el terreno.
