What does the word "vanished" mean in this sentence?
"Beautiful combs, pure tortoise-shell, with jewelled rims - just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair"
Is it used here as a synonym " disappeared"? Thanks in advance for your explanation!

Are you sure the word is "vanished"? It makes no sense here, as it does mean "disappeared".

It's closer to "gone" in this context. She had all her hair cut off, remember! :) A set of combs for the hair that she doesn't have anymore.
