"Abitavo a Londra" and "Ho abitato a Londra" What's the difference between "Abitavo a Londra" and "Ho abitato a Londra". How and when do you use these expression? Thank you.

"Abitavo a Londra" is the Italian equivalent of 'I was living in London. "Ho abitato a Londra" is 'I've lived/I lived in London'.

The main differenxce is in the context: the /form/ abitavo/ is needed if you want to relate two different facts: Example: -- quando abitavo a Londra mi alzavo ogni mattina all'alba, prendevo una lezione di inglese adl mio insegnante e poi andavo al mio lavoro. - un giorno, mentre andavo in bicicletta in un pomeriggio di sole, mi e` successa una cosa molto buffa ..., a quei tempi abitavo a Londra. Or: -- ho abitato a Londra per molto tempo, ed e` stato un periodo felice.
