Could you help me to realize the sentence below? The segregation of the sexes in paid employment may be considered to have both a vertical and a horizontal component. After looking up the dictionary in Chinese, I still have no idea what the actual mean is, so please help me understand it. Thanks in advance

out of context it is hard to know for sure. I don't know if the use of the term 'segregation' here means that male and female are physically separated in the workplace, or that there is a pay differential between the sexes which creates a financial segregation. The vertical and horizontal component part of the quote may refer to the fact that promotions (vertical) are complicated by the fact of the segregation - this makes sense, as most organisations are represented by a pyramid shaped hierarchy, so the number of senior positions reduces as you move upwards through the organisation. If the workforce is literally segregated, then this would cause problems as you would need double the normal number of senior managers, as men could only supervise men, and women supervise women. I am not sure what the horizontal dimension refers to specifically, but would guess that it would be a limitation on people moving across the organisation at their existing work level. So if a vacancy or skill shortage occurred in the male section, only a man could fill it, so it would reduce the flexibility of the workforce. However, this is all a guess, as there isn't much to go on.
