It's technical jargon in psychology. If you are learning psychology, then I hope someone will teach you the meaning! If not, then don't bother because it's not a phrase you will need to use in everyday English. I am not a psychologist. My best guess is : a message to your brain which you are not aware of but which makes you involuntarily think about death. Don't take my definition as true - it is a best guess.
