What will be the correct choice here and why ?
If only you ________ me earlier, I could have helped you out.
1) had told
2) were telling
3) have told
4) would have told
According to me the 4th option would be correct, however I'm not so sure.

1. is correct. It's an example of the third conditional
1st clause :if + subject + past perfect
2nd clause : conditional perfect i.e. subject + would have + past participle
In this case, "could have helped" is another way to say "would have been able to help". The same construction applies.
