the master of understatement
what does it mean when we say someone is "the master of understatement"? I have heard it regarding politicians, artists, and even messiah.

It means they don't exaggerate when they talk, rather they state everything in a minor way.For example if something really terrible happens and you say "Oh dear we have a little problem" that would be an understatement. A master just means the person is very very good at understating situations. The British are very good at this.
