Modal verbs are verbs like 'can' , 'must' and 'may'.

Modal verbs are part of the group called auxiliary verbs (ie. helping verbs). They don't function alone in a sentence, and the following verb is always in the base form.
Look at will, would, can, could, may, might, must, shall and should.
