Simple explanation for Na/No/Em?
I am struggling with knowing when to use Na/No or Em for the word 'in' - I know that no is masculine and na is feminine but are there any easy ways to explain when to use em and when to use no/na?
Thanks!

I am studying Portuguese too Amy, and had the some difficulties with this preposition. Maybe it could help you my experience of using EM, NO, NA: Whenever you do not need to use the definite article you should use EM. NO should be used in the case a masculine noun which asks for the definite article (em+o), e NA with feminine one. Bat please take care of the usage of NUM, (em+um) e NUMA, (em+uma), too.
So: Almoçei NUM restaurante. But, almoçei NO restaurante “Gato Preto”
Wish you all the best in your study.

O (no) é a junção de (em+o) e (na) de (em+a), ou seja, ambas são preposições ligadas a um artigo.
Exemplo, para entender como empregar:
Eu moro no segundo andar.
A roupa está no armário.
Seu vestido está na lavanderia.
Vamos jogar na quadra de vôlei.
Tem brilhantes no meu anel.
Eu te encontrarei na saída do colégio.
Como pode ver sempre me referi a um lugar ou coisa após empregar na e no.

em - preposition
It can be contracted with the definite article:
em+o = no
em+a = na
em+os = nos
em+as = nas
Examples:
Estou em casa (I'm at home)
Estou no supermercado. (I'm at the supermarket)
The definte article is usually omitted before names of cities and towns:
Lisboa é a capital de Portugal. (Lisbon is the capital of Portugal.)
but it is used if those names are also common names:
Estou no Porto. (I'm in Oporto.) (porto means harbour)
With the names of some countries you can use the article or not:
Em Inglaterra/Na Inglaterra
Em Espanha/Na Espanha
