Expressions of time, money, distance, and measured quantity generally take a singular verb. "Three hours is too long to study" "Ten miles is too far to walk" "Fifty dollars is too much for a pencil" "A thousand pounds is too heavy for me to pick up". Thus: Two pounds of ham is too much for me. Much is used with singular, many is used with plural. Much is used with uncountable nouns while many is used with countable nouns. Too much money. Too many birds. Too much water. Too many leaks in the boat.
