What's the difference between "describe" and "explain"?
How do native English speakers distinguish these two words?

Describe is more to do with saying what something looks like or appears. For example: someone can ask you to describe a picture for them or you can describe to someone an experience you've had.
Explain is to give more detail about a situation, idea or method to make things clearer for them. For example you can explain how you got the answer to 345 x 40.
I hope this helps.
