Why is number abbreviated as No. when there is no O in it?

Hi Vivien
English often borrows words from other languages and a lot of it originates in Latin and Greek. You will often see them in the fields of mathematics and scientific writing. I reckon this is an abbreviation of the Latin verb 'numero' - to count.
