Is 'friend' more formal than 'pal'? Friend and pal mean the same, right? So their difference lies on the formality? Thank you for help!

"Friend" is neither formal nor informal. It's a standard word in everyday usage. "Pal", however, is very informal. It's a form of address only used in some dialects, and it's the equivalent of "mate", "dude", "buddy", "bu" and "homie" elsewhere. If you use it in formal situations ir in places where it's not used, you might get strange looks.
